A federal judge in Bridgeport, Conn., on Oct. 7 sentenced Ameer Nasir, 25, of Trumbull, to 24 months in prison and three years of supervised release and ordered $3,547,090.93 in restitution for defrauding Amazon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut. Nasir pleaded guilty to wire fraud in March.
Prosecutors say that from about December 2019 to February 2021, Nasir registered 23 trucking accounts with Amazon Logistics, one in the name of his company, Pak Express Transport LLC, and others using false names or the identifying information of other transportation companies without their operators’ knowledge. He signed up for more than 1,000 assignments, altered data in Amazon Logistics’ transportation management system to show trailer moves he never made and submitted invoices that were paid, the office said.
FreightWaves, citing court records, reported that the scheme misused a manual override in Amazon Relay to get around GPS geofencing. The case shows how borrowed carrier identities can be used to bill for freight that never moved.
