Thieves took about 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab from a tractor-trailer on Island Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia early Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to police and local news reports. The driver had parked to rest before a delivery to a nearby seafood wholesaler and woke to find six men moving boxes from his trailer into a gray Ford F-150 and a gray Dodge Caravan, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. One of the men chased the driver down the street before the group drove off. No arrests were reported.
Two days later, shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, thieves took four pallets of frozen beef from a tractor-trailer on the 6200 block of Milnor Street in the city’s Tacony section, 6abc reported. That driver said he was asleep in his cab when he felt movement and saw three vehicles. Police said they were reviewing nearby cameras and had not released suspect information.
Police have not linked the incidents. Police Capt. Joseph Busa told the Inquirer that recent thefts were “all concerning” but that it was too early to say whether they were connected. The Inquirer also reported earlier 2026 thefts from trailers in the city, including about $40,000 in frozen ground beef taken in Northeast Philadelphia earlier in October and part of a pallet of beef ribs in South Philadelphia in September. In both of this week’s cases, a loaded trailer carrying food was parked overnight on a city street with the driver resting in the cab, a reminder for carriers, shippers and receivers of the exposure that can come with overnight staging ahead of delivery appointments.
